Compositions in the Twentieth Century Journal could be performed by orchestra of 10 parts, 14 parts, or a full orchestra.
Works in both series were published in arrangements that allowed for flexibility in the size of the orchestra. Both covered the same genres of music: dance music by both contemporary American and European composers, concert selections from operas/operettas, medley overtures, and cornet solos with orchestra accompaniment. Pepper's Twentieth Century Journal appears in some ways to have been a continuation of the publisher's Theatrical and Dance Journal.
